STPs – A new way to wreck the NHS

A Sustainability and Transformation Plan is required for each of 44 geographic areas in England but they will not improve the NHS; in fact the reverse says NHS expert Roger Steer.

Private health insurance doesn’t cover A & E!!

“That’s the standard technique of privatisation: defund, make sure things don’t work, people get angry, you hand it over to private capital.” Noam Chomsky Top of the range private medical insurance is no good to you if you are involved in an accident and need urgent treatment. Private hospitals do not have Accident and Emergency (A & E) departments so you will be taken to an NHS hospital with an A & E. Up and down England A & Es are being threatened with closure as figures from NHS Improvement (the new combined name for Monitor and part of the…

The real costs of NHS contracting out

The NHS is being given away! Normally, ‘privatisation’ means that shares are sold by the state-owned organisation to private companies, financial institutions and individuals. But shares are not being sold in the NHS – it is being privatised by contracting out. It’s being given away, the taxpayer is not receiving one penny, and it’s downright theft. Not surprisingly, those benefitting from the taxpayers’ enforced largesse claim that this is not privatisation by the back door. The NHS will still exist although the provision of services will be contracted out to ‘any qualified provider’, which is supposed to be more efficient…

Taxpayers subsidising private pharmacies?

It looks as though the UK Government is subsiding private healthcare companies by allowing them to claim back VAT. And this is possibly illegal under EU regulations. A VAT loophole has led to the absurdity of NHS hospitals closing down their own pharmacies and the private sector opening new pharmacies in their place1.  This is happening because the private sector can claim back VAT paid on drugs, yet a NHS pharmacy cannot!! The NHS is exempt from VAT so it can neither charge VAT nor claim it back. However, private healthcare companies are registered for VAT and when dispensing prescription…

Warning: The EU can seriously damage your health!!

A  Martian spaceship is returning to Mars when the ship’s doctor tells the Captain that a crew member is very ill and will not make it back to Mars. “What’s the nearest planet?” he asks the captain. “Earth, where do you want to land?” “I’ll let you know in a few minutes.” said the doctor as he googled “best health services on planet Earth” from a keyboard on the back of his hand. He was soon on the website the Commonwealth Fund(1) and quickly saw a chart comparing the health services in the 11 richest countries on Earth. The best…

Payment by Results(PbR) is worse than PFI for the NHS

“That’s the standard technique of privatization: defund, make sure things don’t work, people get angry, you hand it over to private capital.” Noam Chomsky   Politicians love to blame everyone else for bringing the NHS to its knees – even the patients themselves are seen to be guilty. How dare you grow old, have dementia, have cancer, be overweight, smoke or need to attend A&E! But the horrific truth is that instead of protecting the NHS, politicians from all the main parties have got into bed with the private healthcare companies, to make the NHS look and perform like a…

In Sickness-In Health-In Profit

In the old, simplistic days of the NHS, your doctor referred you to your local hospital. You were given a letter; you phoned the appropriate hospital department and made an appointment. Not now, as you can only be seen at your local hospital if your GP has a contract with them, or with what is now known as any ‘qualified provider’. At my GP’s surgery, I have requested to be treated only by the NHS, not by private for-profit providers. Needing an MRI scan for a back problem, I was amazed to be told that my GP did not have…

NHS – Eve of Destruction

“No amount of cajolery, and no attempts at ethical or social seduction, can eradicate from my heart a deep burning hatred for the Tory Party. So far as I am concerned, they are lower than vermin.”   Aneurin Bevan’s famous quote automatically comes to mind as we stagger from crisis to crisis in the NHS, although vermin might object to being mentioned in the same breath as the Tory Party! The arrival of the NHS on 5th July 1948 was not an easy birth. It was opposed by the Tories and by the doctors’ trade union, the British Medical Association…
