The Magic Money Tree

Once upon a time there was a magic money tree and it paid for the NHS, council housing, schools, unemployment and sickness benefits, pensions, public transport, care homes etc. Every year towards the end of March the tree blossomed; it was the end of the tax year and companies and the rich paid their taxes to nourish the tree and keep it blooming. The tree no longer blooms; it looks pathetic, devoid of leaves, its branches hanging low, thin and brittle and dying. Older people look at the tree with a mixture of reverence and sadness and realised how lucky…

Will STPs finally wreck the NHS?

NHS Leaflet

Sustainability and Transformation Plans (STPs) are the latest attempt, claim the Tory government, to improve the NHS.  But a more likely outcome is that they will finally wreck what remains of the publically owned NHS. A new report commissioned by London South Bank University1 doesn’t pull its punches in answering the question on whether STPs will improve the NHS and the health service offered to us, the public at large. The background to the report is that in late 2016 the 44 STPs, based on newly defined geographic areas of England, published their STPs setting out how health and care…

Private health insurance doesn’t cover A & E!!

“That’s the standard technique of privatisation: defund, make sure things don’t work, people get angry, you hand it over to private capital.” Noam Chomsky Top of the range private medical insurance is no good to you if you are involved in an accident and need urgent treatment. Private hospitals do not have Accident and Emergency (A & E) departments so you will be taken to an NHS hospital with an A & E. Up and down England A & Es are being threatened with closure as figures from NHS Improvement (the new combined name for Monitor and part of the…

The real costs of NHS contracting out

The NHS is being given away! Normally, ‘privatisation’ means that shares are sold by the state-owned organisation to private companies, financial institutions and individuals. But shares are not being sold in the NHS – it is being privatised by contracting out. It’s being given away, the taxpayer is not receiving one penny, and it’s downright theft. Not surprisingly, those benefitting from the taxpayers’ enforced largesse claim that this is not privatisation by the back door. The NHS will still exist although the provision of services will be contracted out to ‘any qualified provider’, which is supposed to be more efficient…

Taxpayers subsidising private pharmacies?

It looks as though the UK Government is subsiding private healthcare companies by allowing them to claim back VAT. And this is possibly illegal under EU regulations. A VAT loophole has led to the absurdity of NHS hospitals closing down their own pharmacies and the private sector opening new pharmacies in their place1.  This is happening because the private sector can claim back VAT paid on drugs, yet a NHS pharmacy cannot!! The NHS is exempt from VAT so it can neither charge VAT nor claim it back. However, private healthcare companies are registered for VAT and when dispensing prescription…

Neo-Liberalism – Invisible Fascism?

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism, because it is a mergerof State and corporate power.” Benito Mussolini I originally posted this article 3 years ago and, regrettably, it’s getting worse!! The UK economy today has some startling similarities to the economy of Nazi Germany and privatisation is at the heart of both. The Spanish economist Germà Bel1 stated that the word – which is synonymous with neo-liberalism and Thatcher – has its origins in the German word reprivatisierung (denationalisation) and the term was first used in English by the Berlin correspondent of the Economist in 19361 to describe how the Nazi…

Warning: The EU can seriously damage your health!!

A  Martian spaceship is returning to Mars when the ship’s doctor tells the Captain that a crew member is very ill and will not make it back to Mars. “What’s the nearest planet?” he asks the captain. “Earth, where do you want to land?” “I’ll let you know in a few minutes.” said the doctor as he googled “best health services on planet Earth” from a keyboard on the back of his hand. He was soon on the website the Commonwealth Fund(1) and quickly saw a chart comparing the health services in the 11 richest countries on Earth. The best…

The EU is a Class Issue

“It is the responsibility of the patriot to protect his country from its government.” Thomas Paine Class war may have ended but there is still the politics of class and this includes perceptions of the European Union (EU). Generalisations are always that but there is a distinct likelihood that the middle and working classes will vote very differently over continued membership of the EU. The majority of the middle class see the EU as a wide canvas, and can buy-in to slogans like ‘Britain Stronger in Europe’ (BSE). They accept that the EU is a work-in-progress, albeit a slow one,…

TTIP – A Treaty made in Hell!!

“Fascism should more appropriately be called Corporatism, because it is a merger of State and corporate power.” Benito Mussolini  You thought the banking crisis and the recession were bad? You ain’t seen nothin’ yet! TTIP – Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership – is the latest deal the bankers, corporations and governments don’t want you to know about.  But just in case you find out just how toxic it could become, they’ve made sure that voters in the EU and the US will not have any opportunity to vote on it.  It’s happening behind closed doors in Brussels and Washington. The…
